A month ago, we were telling you about the great deed achieved by the under-12 team of UE Cornellà winning for second year in a row the Spanish phase of the Danone Nations Cup.
That victory meant play the final phase in the Moroccan city of Marrakech representing Spain. UE Cornellà ended the group stage undefeated, after drew against Brazil in the initial game in a goalless match, the greens defeated 2-0 and 1-0 UAE and South Korea respectively. The coach Pere Olivé, after the good results of the team declared, “the goal is already accomplished, from now on whatever it comes will be welcome”.
In the first round of the knockout stage the obstacle to overcome was Portugal. The game was very tight and a goal from the Australian player Thymos made the difference and allowed Cornellà to move forward in the tournament. This victory meant achieve the best performance of Spain in the competition since 2012 and allowed to keep chasing the dream of our team.
The next phase Cornellà would face the host country Morocco. After a great match, the game ended as it started so the game should be decided at the penalty shootout and the ones who were more successful from the eleven meters were Morocco. That meant the elimination of UE Cornellà and fight for the 5th position against Canada, and once again the game went to the penalties but luckily this time Cornellà won.
The team leaves the competition unbeaten and having achieved the second best historical place of Spain in the tournament. No doubt about it is a huge success and shows us again the great youth players and talents UE Cornellà possess. Congratulations guys for this 5th place in the Danone Cup!
